Liu Yang was born in Shandong Province, China, on May 19, 1980. She graduated from Tsinghua University with a degree in aerospace engineering, and she began her career as a pilot in the Chinese Air Force.

In 2010, Liu Yang was selected to participate in the first-ever manned space mission in China's history. She became the second woman to enter space, and she spent six days aboard the Shenzhou IX spacecraft in 2012.
